3 Yoga Poses for Your Mental Health

Updated: 4 days ago

We all know yoga is beneficial in many ways—physiologically, psychologically, and spiritually. But how can we use yoga to treat psychological mood disorders like depression and anxiety?

By promoting steady, slow, deep breathing, yoga helps you stay calm, relaxed, and keeps your mental health on track. Try these poses to manage mood disorders like depression and anxiety:

  1. Sukhasana (Easy Pose)

Start with Sukhasana, also known as the Easy Pose. Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position with your spine straight, ensuring your posture is relaxed yet upright.

This simple yet powerful yoga pose is effective in helping you deal with stress, depression, and anxiety. As you settle into the pose, focus on your breath, taking slow, deep inhalations and exhalations. You can also choose to chant a mantra, which can enhance the meditative quality of this pose. This practice helps to calm your mind, clear your thoughts, and maintain a balanced mental state.

2. Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold Pose)

Move to Uttanasana, or Standing Forward Fold Pose. From a standing position, bend down and grab your ankles. This pose relieves tension in the neck, shoulders, and back while directing blood flow to your brain. Practising this every day helps you feel at ease and improves your mood. 3. Savasana (Corpse Pose)

Finish with Savasana, or Corpse Pose. Lie on your back with your arms and feet relaxed. This pose is excellent for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. By focusing on your breathing, you gain better control over your mind. Savasana, typically performed at the end of a yoga session, helps you relax and rejuvenate.

By integrating these poses into your daily routine, you can effectively manage stress and mood disorders. To deepen your practice and help others, consider joining S-VYASA University's community.
